The Maciejowski Bible, which is also called the Bible of the Crusaders, is a document of great pictorial beauty, composed of 46 pages. It is a medieval illustrated Bible of the Old Testament. It is currently kept in the Morgan Library and Museum in New York. The illuminations of the Bible have considerable artistic wealth, as it is considered a Gothic masterpiece and, among them, the image of the Fausal Maciejowski sword appears.
It is believed that it could have been made by six different miniaturists, in France, around the year 1250. The illuminations show aspects of medieval daily life: clothing, means of transportation, musical instruments; It is an unparalleled source for the interpretation of the Middle Ages, due to its pictorial richness, quality of representation and visual information. In the military aspect, it constitutes one of the most complete sources for its study. The fidelity with which the knight, the archer or the infantry is represented makes this work a fundamental milestone for studying weapons and armor throughout the Christian West.
In the world of swords there are references to the existence of Fausal Maciejowski swords that seem to be in daily use, among foot troops, without uniformity, with civilian or peasant clothing that also gave them the use of machetes for clearing brush. The Fausal is a very basic but effective weapon, it is used to hit a horse, with two hands, at a gallop as shown in the illustrations of the Maciejowski Bible. Due to its type of design, it is a weapon more typical of infantry, the long handle allows for leverage that, added to the inertia, would make it a terrible, devastating weapon. All of them are represented with a slightly curved edge and a lot of tip typical of weapons intended to deliver slashing blows similar to the Chinese Daos or curved Sabers. They could be used with one or two hands.
