Wood is a material found in the trunks of trees, which grow year after year, forming concentric rings corresponding to the different growth of biomass depending on the seasons and which are composed of cellulose fibers linked with lignin.
Once cut and dried, the wood is used for different purposes. One of them is the making of wooden swords for training.
Since the time of the Romans, the wooden sword was used by gladiators to practice their craft and they received it from the master of gladiators as a sign of their absolute license and individual freedom.
From that moment on, they could not be forced to fight unless they voluntarily showed up in the arena. But if the gladiator was a slave, then he had to fight when his master asked him to.
The wooden sword received by a gladiator was equivalent to a great honor, since few survived more than 10 combats. It represented the passage to Roman citizenship, and although it allowed them not to have to fight, it was common for them to continue doing so surrounded by great honors.
It could also be given by one or more disciples as payment for the teachings of a master, who thus acquired his freedom, the honor being even greater.
Currently, wooden swords are used as an excellent instrument to practice the dexterity of combatant movements. Because they are light, they are manageable, as well as safe to avoid injuries.
