The rapier is a type of sword with a very narrow blade used as an accessory in certain uniforms and is the predecessor weapon of the sword, one of the three blades used in fencing.
Originally the sword was a hard, light weapon, with a blade that weighed about 750 g. This might seem insignificant but combined with the shape of the blade, which was triangular in cross section and with its length of 1.09 to 1.14 m, it became an impressive looking weapon.
It is of French origin and has evolved from the rapier, being excellent for dodging blows and delivering thrusts, which makes the rapsword a deadly weapon in duels.
A variant of the sword used as a training weapon was created, the foil, which would be one of the three weapons of classical fencing and, in the 20th century, of sports fencing.
Its period of greatest popularity was the 18th century. With the birth of sports fencing, the dueling sword evolved into the sword that is used today in this Olympic sport.
The main difference between the dueling sword and the fencing sword is that the second has a blunt tip so as not to hurt the opponent. The broadsword and the dueling sword are therefore two different types of sword.
