Typology of Functional Swords

We are going to establish a typology of swords, excluding Japanese swords or katanas, based on their functionality and use.

Functional swords are those that we use to practice and train in combat because they are fighting swords. They can also be collector's items. They have carbon steel blade and full tang. Obviously, although all functional swords are very resistant, there are some characteristics that make some more resistant than others.

For this reason, we wanted to classify the functional swords into three categories, which can help us orient ourselves when we want to get our hands on one of these wonderful swords.

SWORDS —> Category A

Functional swords with blades made of tempered high-carbon steel with optimal Rockwell hardness. They have a blunt edge and are not sharp. Recommended for use in combat (Battle Ready).

SWORDS —> Category B

Functional swords with tempered and balanced carbon steel blades to withstand combat. They have a blunt edge and are not sharp.

This category includes all swords for training, recreations, historical fencing (HEMA), performing arts, etc..

It is recommended to use Category B Swords with swords of similar characteristics, if possible from the same manufacturer. We do not recommend using them with Category A swords as they could suffer damage to their blades and shorten their useful life.

SWORDS —> Category C

Functional swords made with tempered carbon steel blades that are usually of good quality for combat but, as they are sharp, have a marked edge or are pointed, they are intended for collectors or professionals who practice some disciplines alone. They should never be used in combat with other weapons.

Also included are unsharpened swords that, due to their manufacturing characteristics or tests carried out, are considered functional but are intended for collection pieces, training or individual practices.

It goes without saying that the use and enjoyment of any functional sword, classified in any of the previous categories, is the personal and exclusive responsibility of the person who uses it. However, it should not be surprising that even the best carbon steel suffers gradual wear, so the life of the sword is limited in time, even if we use and maintain it well. It is natural and we should not worry that the blade of a functional sword ends up getting nicked after years and use. On the contrary, this values it because it shows that it has really been used.
